Muitas vezes esperamos que as coisas em nossas vidas mudem como num passe de mágica. Como se algum acontecimento ou pessoa pudessem mudar nossa realidade, assim, de repente, sem precisarmos mudar nosso comportamento. Acreditamos, por exemplo, que, quando casarmos, ou tivermos mais dinheiro, ou formos reconhecidos, seremos finalmente felizes. Percebo que algo parecido acontece quando sentimos dor, ou temos alguma doença. Queremos nos livrar dela, porque ela está atrapalhando nossa vida. Vamos a um terapeuta (ou a um médico), esperando que ele então resolva nosso problema. Como se fosse, mágica! Ao agir assim, esquecemos um princípio fundamental da saúde: o princípio da auto-cura, ou auto-regulação. Esse princípio significa que nosso corpo tem uma sabedoria interna, capaz de conduzir a si mesmo para o equilíbrio, para a cura. Mais que isso, nosso corpo é o único capaz de percorrer esse caminho. Portanto, delegar a cura para alguém ou algo externo vai contra a ordem natural da vida dentro de nós. Ao fazer isso, perdemos ainda a preciosa oportunidade que a dor ou doença nos traz: de assumir a responsabilidade por nossa vida, nossos pensamentos, sentimentos e comportamentos. Somente quando nos tornamos responsáveis pelo que pensamos, sentimos e agimos, é que podemos transformar algo em nós e em nossa vida (do contrário, continuamos recriando o passado). Assim, quando a dor ou doença aparece, temos duas opções: podemos querer ficar livre delas; ou podemos escolher ir mais fundo, aprender com elas, e mudar algo importante em nossa vida.
